Dear Lesley: stranger things

Dear Lesley,

I have been experiencing more cramping lately. I don’t get cramps when I run or when I lift. I get them at awkward times. It could be the slightest thing such as reaching to tie my shoes or buckle my seatbelt. I even get cramps when I laugh or stretch and yawn at the same time. That’s strange. Should I eat more bananas? – I’M NOT STRESSED

Dear not stressed,

You didn’t mention it, so I have to ask – do you hydrate your body consistently throughout the day? What do you use to hydrate your body prior to, during, and after your workouts? Whether or not you are practicing adequate hydration is a very important factor. You want to ensure that you are drinking water daily and that you are including electrolytes in your diet. You can receive electrolytes from nourishing foods such as sweet potatoes, avocados, and fermented foods.

Bananas contain potassium, magnesium, and calcium. While these nutrients are necessary to prevent or relieve muscle cramps, simply eating more bananas may not improve the frequent occurrences you’re experiencing.

Have you discussed this issue with your doctor to rule out more serious concerns such as nutrient deficiencies? Are you aware of any issues regarding your potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sodium levels? You may want to contact your doctor’s office and let them decide if it is necessary to schedule an appointment to determine the cause(s) if the cramps are persistent.
