Dear Lesley: it's not complicated you're just constipated

Dear Lesley,

Do you think stool softeners are healthy? I started taking stool softeners when I noticed I wasn’t going for a few days at a time. I don’t know why it started but it was hard to go after a while. – RICK

Dear rick,

I wouldn’t say stool softeners are healthy or unhealthy. However, I believe they serve a purpose. When I worked in a skilled nursing facility, some of my patients needed stool softeners, largely due to their medications and limited mobility.

How much fruit do you eat daily? Do you eat any raw vegetables? I suggest starting with something as simple as an apple in the morning and a serving of grapes in the evening. Even if you slice the apple, leave the skin on. All the good stuff for your digestive system is in the skin. Try increasing your consumption of organic, fresh fruit daily with a glass of water and let me know if you notice a difference.

*****UPDATE*****

Dear Lesley,

Thank you for your help. Ever since I started eating apples two times a day, I haven’t needed a stool softener. I threw that bottle in the drawer. I started with apples because I know I could get that from the market, and I could keep it up. The apples worked really good and it didn’t take long too. I haven’t had any problems going and I make sure I don’t skip a day of eating two pieces of fruit with water. Thank you, Lesley.
