Eating in Season: Tips for Parents

Eating foods that are in season is beneficial in that you are consuming foods that have naturally ripened therefore increasing the availability of the nutrients. Consuming foods in the proper season also enhances the flavor of those foods due to the reduction in chemical interference. The opportunities to explore new dishes and recipes increase as well. Eating seasonally naturally diversifies your diet and nutrient consumption with ease. For more information about eating is season refer to my post Eating Seasonally, Locally.

Tips for parents of young children:

  • Take your children to the market with you. There are many sights and sounds to stimulate them and encourage social engagement. Sometimes there are activities available primarily for young children at the various booths.
  • Allow your children to help select the fruits and vegetables from the market stands. Presenting your children with the foods they eat prior to serving them cooked can help with their reception of new foods.
  • Introducing consumption of fruits and vegetables grown in season can promote normalizing variety in your children’s diet. The exposure to the vast colors and assortment of produce may help with reducing limiting thoughts around fruits and vegetables. When you offer only the fruits and vegetables that are available in season, they will be encouraged to try something new at times. It could help them break away from regularly choosing their favorite 1 to 2 fruits or vegetables year-round.

Use the trips to the market as time to not only build bonds with your children, but to also teach them the importance of knowing the source of their food and supporting their local community.

Having your children eat seasonal fruits and vegetables means they are getting fresher foods which will taste better and have greater nutritional value. I hope you find these tips helpful. I look forward to learning of your exciting stories about family market visits as well as viewing any photos you would like to share.
