To Weigh or Not to Weigh

Dear Lesley: To Weigh or not to weigh

Dear Lesley,

I am getting into a wellness routine and part of that routine is meal planning. Do you think it is necessary to weigh my food? – Just a girl

Dear Just a Girl,

It depends on your individual situation. Instances exist where meticulously measuring food portions proves not only necessary but also advantageous. This is particularly evident for individuals navigating the delicate path of recovering from an eating disorder, managing the complexities of kidney disease, or contending with identifying proper food portions and understanding portion control.

If you are managing a condition that necessitates precise measurement of ingredients to support your health or if you are on a journey of food relationship recovery, then indeed, weighing your ingredients becomes imperative in controlling your nutrient intake. However, if you do not have a medical need or guidance from a healthcare professional and only seek to enhance your wellness regimen, then, in my view, it is not required.

Part of establishing an effective wellness routine includes implementing simple, practical habits that are conducive to your well-being and your lifestyle. If you find weighing your food to be off putting, difficult to incorporate, or stressful, revisit incorporating this aspect at a later time.
