I keep having flare-ups and I cannot figure out why. I have stopped eating fried foods, gluten, and almost all the American type of food. I mostly stick to salads, grilled meats and vegetables, and Asian type of food because I feel like it is lighter. I treat myself every now and then. I have not been diagnosed with Crohn’s by my doctor, but I believe I am allergic to gluten. I also notice that I feel like crap after having a little too much sugar. What do you think could be going on? – OVER IT
Do you see a functional medicine doctor? It sounds like you will benefit from a round of testing to specify if you have some sensitivities or intolerances. Are you tracking what you have eaten when you experience a flare-up?
Something to consider about your situation is hidden triggers. They’re hidden because you do not know that they are a trigger for you and/or because you may not know the full contents of what you are eating. Sauces, gravies, and broths can have ingredients that can lead to flare-ups if they contain an allergen or a triggering item. What are the ingredients in your salad dressing? Is the dressing high in sugar? You mentioned Asian foods, so does that mean you are eating soy sauce, soy noodles, or processed meat alternatives like tempeh? Those may be triggering foods for you even though they are lighter and viewed as healthy.
I suggest seeing a doctor that specializes in functional medicine that can help you find out the root cause of your discomfort. Once you are aware of the cause, you will be to choose foods that do not make you feel uncomfortable. You may be able to broaden your food choices to diversify your nutrient intake and even enjoy mealtime again.
