Dear Lesley: anything but water

Dear Lesley,

Can I get enough water from drinking a lot of different liquids? I drink a lot of liquids throughout the day. I juice and I drink smoothies, coffee, and health drinks from a health food store. I drink flavored sparkling water to keep me from drinking soda. I make sure to buy the healthy, organic stuff too. Do I need to drink a lot of water when I already drink a lot of liquids? – LOW KEY

Dear Low Key,

I low key feel like you do not like water, but you know you need it. To answer your question of whether you can get enough water from drinking a lot of different liquids, you have to know your fluid needs which depends on things like your age, lifestyle, activity level, weight, etc. Although our bodies extract water from other sources which is known as metabolic water, it is in very small amounts. When you are aiming to get enough water, water is the best source and the best way to stay hydrated.

To answer your question of whether you need to drink a lot of water, the answer is no. What do you mean by a lot? How much water are we talking? Too much water can be dangerous, especially if you’re at risk for certain medical conditions.

You have implemented some great practices by choosing healthier options and by purchasing organic items. Find out what your fluid needs are and try to incorporate more water into your regimen that aligns with you needs.
