Dear Lesley: why so many vitamins

Dear Lesley,

My doctor told me to take vitamin D3 and magnesium. I don’t like the thought of having to take several pills every day. Can I take only one multivitamin with both of those things in it? I do not like taking pills, but I will if I have to. What multivitamin would you recommend for me to get both things in one pill? – SHERYL

Dear Sheryl,

You and I have something in common. I too do not like taking pills. Based on what you have shared, I would suggest that you direct this question to your doctor’s office. Your doctor advised that you supplement with two specific nutrients. Did they explain to you why you should take these two items precisely? What amount of these nutrients did your doctor advise you receive? Are you deficient in these nutrients? Are you taking a medication or receiving treatment that is causing depletion of these nutrients? Before deciding to purchase a single multivitamin, get more information about your nutritional needs from your doctor.

All vitamins are not created equally. Quality and potency are of upmost importance when selecting supplements. You must verify if the amounts of vitamin D3 and magnesium in the multivitamin you choose is enough to meet the amount your doctor advised. I cannot recommend a specific multivitamin for you. However, I can recommend factors for you to consider when choosing vitamins.

  • Research brands and manufacturers and verify that they have been tested for safety, quality, purity, and potency.
  • Consider modifying your dietary habits. Increase your consumption of vitamin D3 and magnesium containing foods.
