How do you know if someone has an eating disorder? – JUST WONDERING
Unless there is an admission of a need/desire for help or clear behavioral and/or verbal aversions towards food and eating, you can’t just know. Without being professionally trained to diagnose visible physical indicators, behavioral patterns, and clinical implications, you may not really know.
My first round of supervised clinical experience was at a clinical practice that specialized in treatment and management of eating disorders. I worked with clients who struggled with eating disorders from adolescence well into their adulthood. There were even members of the same family receiving treatment who battled with eating disorders in their family for generations. As with anything so personal, it can be hard to cope.
If you are wondering if you have an eating disorder, speak to your primary care physician asap. Explain to the doctor your concerns and after completing an assessment, you will be informed next steps based on your needs.
However, if you are wondering if a loved one or friend has an eating disorder, consider consulting with a professional on how to approach the situation. If you feel you have the type of relationship that you can address them without guidance, be mindful, respectful, and compassionate. Living with an eating disorder can be a very challenging battle. In many cases, it is so much more than food. Do not have any expectations. Though your efforts may be well-intended, it is possible that they may dismiss your concerns. What I witnessed in my clinical experience is that some may be in denial about the seriousness of the situation. This could be because they have been dealing with it for so long or because they think that it is not detectable and carry on as if they are doing fine. Some refuse to verbally admit they have an issue while others are uncomfortable with labeling it. I noticed that it is hard for some to relinquish control, especially when dealing with eating disorders. Try not to pry. Simply explain what you have observed and why you are concerned. Offer to go with them to see a professional for support if needed. You can share some resources with them as well.
No matter what, handle the situation with the utmost care and extend grace whether you are wondering for yourself or for someone else. Click here and here for additional information. Be encouraged.
