Dear Lesley: CARBS: GOOD OR BAD?

Dear Lesley,

Why do carbs get such a bad rep? There are so many “no carb” diets but don’t we need carbs for energy? Are some carbs better than others? – CONFUSED ABOUT CARBS

Dear Carb Conscious,

Carbohydrates often get a bad reputation because of lack of knowledge about the different types of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates can be simple or complex, depending on the chemical structure and the length of time it takes the carbohydrate to be digested. Both types are broken down into glucose for absorption in the body.

Yes, we need carbohydrates to provide energy/fuel for our bodies. Simple carbohydrates are broken down quickly. Complex carbohydrates take longer to break down therefore providing longer lasting energy.

Examples of simple carbohydrates include refined products such as cakes, cookies, and white breads and pastas, and items with added sugars. Overconsumption of simple carbohydrates can contribute to weight gain and is associated with risk of high cholesterol, heart disease, and diabetes. Examples of complex carbohydrates include fresh fruit, legumes, vegetables, and whole grains. Complex carbohydrates contain additional vitamins, minerals, and the key nutrient, fiber. Due to it taking longer to break down complex carbohydrates, they are more filling making them the better choice for weight management. Bottom line: all carbs are not bad, complex carbohydrates are healthier than simple carbohydrates.

When deciding whether or not to restrict carbohydrates, it is important to understand that it’s the type and the amount of carbohydrates one eats that matters. If you are considering following a low-carb dietary pattern, speak with your healthcare provider first.
